Professor Obiajulu Nnamuchi Presides Over Inaugural Faculty Board Meeting

A symbolic moment of transition and goodwill at the inaugural Faculty Board meeting.

It was a meeting that combined reflection, gratitude, counsel, celebration and renewed hope for the future as Professor Obiajulu Nnamuchi, the newly elected Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Nigeria, presided over the inaugural Faculty Board meeting of his administration.

Professor Nnamuchi assumed the reins of leadership following his unanimous election as Dean on 16 July 2026, a remarkable expression of confidence by members of the Faculty in his capacity to provide purposeful and inclusive leadership. The inaugural meeting provided an appropriate setting for the formal transition from the immediate past administration and for the articulation of the principles that would guide the new leadership.

Celebrating a Legacy of Achievement

Proceedings commenced with an address by the immediate past Dean, Professor Festus Ukwueze, whose tenure was marked by significant developments across various areas of the Faculty's academic and institutional life. His administration recorded more than 43 achievements, leaving a substantial foundation upon which the new leadership can build.

The occasion was therefore not merely a change of leadership, but also an opportunity to acknowledge the work already accomplished and affirm the importance of continuity in the Faculty's pursuit of academic excellence.

Justice, Fairness and Mercy: A Tripod for Leadership

In his remarks to the Board, Professor Nnamuchi expressed his commitment to upholding the ideals, values and regulations of the University of Nigeria. More significantly, he outlined the philosophy that would guide his administration: a tripod of justice, fairness and mercy.

The declaration set the tone for an administration that seeks to combine fidelity to institutional rules with fairness in decision-making and humanity in dealing with members of the Faculty community. Professor Nnamuchi further pledged to run a transparent and accountable administration, emphasising his willingness to work with every member of the Faculty and to deploy individuals according to their respective capacities, competencies and skills.

His message was one of collective responsibility: the progress of the Faculty would not be the accomplishment of the Dean alone, but the product of the contributions of its entire community.

Words of Counsel from Senior Colleagues

One of the memorable aspects of the inaugural meeting was the opportunity for senior members of the Faculty to offer words of counsel to the new Dean. Professor Ifeoma Enemo,  Professor Chris Anyanwu, Prof Obimma Ezike (Obiegede), Professor Edith Nwosu, Dr Jude Odinkonigbo and Dr Clara Obi-Ochiabutor, the immediate past Associate Dean. Individually shared perspectives drawn from years of academic and institutional experience.

Although expressed in different ways, their interventions converged around important principles of university leadership: openness to advice, broad consultation, familiarity with University regulations, integrity, transparency and accountability. They also encouraged the new Dean to preserve and strengthen the existing culture of love, collegiality and excellence for which the Faculty has become known.

The moment reflected one of the enduring strengths of the Faculty of Law: its ability to draw upon the institutional memory and experience of senior academics while creating room for a new generation of leadership.

Dr Fochi Nwodo Emerges Associate Dean

Another major item at the meeting was the constitution of the new Faculty leadership team. Professor Nnamuchi nominated Dr Fochi Nwodo to serve as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Law. The nomination received the resounding approval of the Faculty Board.

Dr Nwodo, regarded by colleagues as industrious, dependable and a 'lieutenant' committed to the Faculty, is expected to work closely with the Dean in advancing the objectives of the new administration. Her selection signals the Dean's stated intention to assemble a team based on competence, capacity and commitment to service.

Faculty remains one community united by a common institutional heritage and commitment to excellence.

Ending on a Celebratory Note

The inaugural Board meeting concluded on a convivial note with a sumptuous meal generously sponsored by Dr Chibuike Amucheazi (Ezemmuo). The meal, described by attendees as exceptionally generous and memorable, provided a fitting conclusion to a meeting characterised by gratitude for the past, goodwill in the present and optimism for the future.

As Professor Nnamuchi begins his tenure as Dean, expectations are understandably high. Yet the unanimous confidence expressed in his election, the wise counsel offered by senior colleagues, the constitution of his leadership team and his own commitment to justice, fairness, mercy, transparency and accountability provide an encouraging foundation.

The inaugural Board meeting thus represented much more than the first formal gathering under a new Dean. It marked the opening of a new chapter in the continuing story of the Faculty of Law, University of Nigeria - one rooted in its established tradition of excellence while looking confidently towards an even stronger future.
